Head of Software Engineering

The Head of Software Engineering is a mission critical position responsible for Product Engineering, Product Management, and Technical Support and Enablement of the Robotic Skies digital platform.

Our B2B marketplace platform will enable the entire Robotic Skies business model and allow users to collaboratively manage the UAS maintenance life cycle. The platform will be used to administer all aspects of customer, partner, service center network member, and developer API interactions and transactions.

The ideal candidate is passionate, energetic, customer-focused, and somebody who understands the challenges of growing an early-stage company and navigating initial product-market fit. The candidate is expected to work with Robotic Skies’ leadership to develop a comprehensive technology strategy and then be able to execute the strategy, whether by managing a development team or rolling up their sleeves and jumping into the code. Whatever it takes.

While this position is not for the faint of heart, it provides an opportunity for the right individual to own the technology efforts at a small company and grow it into something truly unique. 

This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

The company is centralizing in Salt Lake City, Utah and we’d prefer this role to be based there.


  • Ownership of the Robotic Skies technology platform
  • Ownership of the comprehensive strategy and roadmap for the deployment and growth of the platform, balancing the near-term needs with the long-term vision
  • Ensuring alignment of the strategy with business objectives through open communication with other members of the Robotic Skies leadership team
  • Ensuring the platform meets requirements for usability, value, viability, and feasibility
  • Building and managing the engineering team to execute on the platform strategy
  • Developing and managing budgets for all lines of accountability

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related technical field, or commensurate practical experience
  • 7 years of professional experience in engineering, with experience in technical innovation
  • Demonstrated understanding of the techniques and methods of modern product discovery and delivery
  • Experience working on technology-powered products as either a product manager, product designer, engineer, data analyst, data scientist, or user researcher
  • Demonstrated ability to figure out solutions to hard problems with many constraints, using sound judgement to assess risks, and to lay out your argument in a well-structured, data-informed, written narrative
  • Demonstrated ability to learn multiple functional areas of business – engineering, design, finance, sales, marketing, and regulatory compliance
  • Proven ability to engage with distributed team of engineers, designers, and company leaders in a constructive and collaborative relationship
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident legally able to work in the US
  • Must hold a valid, current US passport

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with ERP systems, Customer Relation Management (CRM) systems, analytics tools, organization intranet and internet sites, integrating with off-the-shelf applications, cloud migration, and DevOps and microservices initiatives
  • Extensive experience building industrial-grade applications
  • Experience with Image Processing and Annotation technologies
  • Familiarity with analytic techniques like machine learning
  • Experience with developing B2B marketplaces
  • Willingness to travel, both domestically and internationally

Technical Account Manager

The Technical Account Manager is responsible for becoming the technical expert on maintaining, inspecting, and repairing various commercial unmanned aircraft systems.

This responsibility entails close interaction with and building relationships with our manufacturing and service center network partners. The Technical Account Manager is the first point of contact for a service request and will see it through to resolution.

This position is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Relocation assistance provided.


Technical Support:

  • Manage service requests, work order creation and daily workflow management as point-of-contact for customer
  • Perform hands-on repairs in aircraft-on-ground (AOG) situations
  • Assist OEMs in troubleshooting technical issues
  • Capture and formal reporting of maintenance data

Detailed Support Plan (DSP) creation and implementation:

  • Develop DSPs in collaboration with assigned manufacturers and fleet operators
  • Perform validations of OEM time and parts estimates
  • Determine scheduled maintenance plans and repair procedures
  • Determine test-equipment requirements
  • Review and assess documentation and maintenance plan gaps
  • Identify areas of opportunity to generate consulting revenues
  • Regularly review DSPs and service levels to assure quality
  • Provide input to management on service levels to maximize profits to service centers and Robotic Skies


  • Assist in development of technical training requirements and documents
  • Coordinate technician training programs

Workflow Implementation:

  • Help design and implement Robotic Skies service workflow system
  • Design best practices for UAS repair process based on experience in manned aviation, including documentation and conformance to regulations


  • Minimum 5 years professional or educational experience as an aviation technician or related field
  • Experience in FAA Part 145 avionics repair station operations and workflow management
  • Experience working as a certified avionics repairman or equivalent
  • Experience soldering electronic boards and connectors
  • Familiarity with Federal Air Regulations
  • Ability to engage with FAA as required
  • Ability to document repair processes, findings, and ongoing reporting
  • Willingness to travel, often on short notice for AOG situations
  • Ability to accommodate unpredictable schedule
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident legally able to work in the US
  • Preferred: Hands on experience in UAS repair and familiarity with unmanned systems, including command and control, airframe types and integrated components
  • Preferred: Aviation mechanic certificate with an airframe rating
